Welcome to Newton, Massachusetts!

Newton is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The city is bordered by Waltham and Watertown on the north, Needham and the West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston on the south, Wellesley and Weston on the west, and Brookline and the Brighton neighborhood of Boston on the east. From Watertown to Waltham to Needham and Dedham, Newton is bounded by the Charles River. The first permanent residents in what would become Newton settled near the Brighton line in the 1630s. Gradually others joined them and by the 1650s about fifteen families were living in the area.

EDUCATION

There are 12,657 students enrolled in fifteen elementary schools (K-5), four middle schools (6-8), two comprehensive high schools (9-12), and two alternative high school programs. In addition, the integrated preschool program serves 195 students (October 2016). Over 70 different languages are spoken within the student/parent population. The Newton school district belongs to the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO), a state-funded voluntary educational desegregation program enrolling over 400 Boston students in Newton schools. Newton is also a Member of the Education Collaborative for Greater Boston (EDCO), which includes 17 urban and suburban communities.

RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

The Newton Parks and Recreation Department provides tradtional and innovative Recreation, Leisure and Cultural Activities in a quality environment for all residents of Newton, as well as managing the preservation, maintenance, and enhancement of the natural resources of the City. Newton’s recreational facilities include museums, libraries, parks, playgrounds, walking trails and cinemas. Some of which include, the Newton History Museum, Newton Main Library, Nahanton Park, Crystal Lake, walking trails and the West Newton Cinema.
